Hello, I'm Joshua Susic!
I started my musical journey when I was about four years old learning piano from my grandmother. Since then, I've continued on to play many different instruments, most of which I still play today.
In fourth grade I started learning saxophone, and in middle school I started guitar. In high school I started composing, joined marching band as a saxophone player, started a rock band with my friends for a year where I played keyboard, and started my teaching experience with a summer camp targeted towards elementary and middle schoolers.
Since I've started music college in late 2013, I've been fully dedicated to studying music. There I learned various other instruments such as trumpet, flute, and clarinet. Since then I've also sung in many choral groups of disparate sizes and styles, ranging from large chamber ensembles performing with symphonies to small vocal jazz groups.
Currently, I've completed my Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts Degrees in Music Composition at San Francisco State University. I've worked with and written for many ensembles with various instrumentations such as Elevate Ensemble, Loadbang, Splinter Reeds, and the JACK quartet. In 2023 I finished my first symphony as part of my Masters Degree, which was performed by the orchestra at SF State.
With composition or performance I often view my work as art expressing a specific idea, emotion, or story. In general, I try to use a fusion of various genres to hopefully get a sound that I can call my own. Ever since I started teaching professionally in 2016, I often try my best with my students to inspire them to the same degree of creative expression.
In my free time, besides composing I often find myself either playing video games, watching videos/podcasts online, or watching shows/movies with my family.
